Course description: This is a GCSE course suitable for boys and girls. Pupils do not have to be exceptional sportsmen/women or have to have represented school-teams. The course involves several sports not previously done and includes outdoor pursuit type activities, e.g. hill/mountain walking, camp craft and off-site orienteering. Assessment is as follows: Assessment of practical performance (60%) This will consist of a demonstration of practical performance in 4 areas of activity. Candidates will be continuously assessed by the teacher and will be able to demonstrate competence in each activity, display a knowledge and understanding of laws, rules, techniques, strategies and safety factors. Pupils will be expected to officiate in different sports, and will learn how to plan training schedules. To gain the highest marks, pupils must show an improvement in skill level from Year 10 to Year 11. The course also includes the opportunity to take part in an overnight camping expedition in North Wales to gain an assessment in Hill Walking/Campcraft. There are also opportunities for pupils to be coached by professional sportsmen/women in several sports, a trip to the National Sports Centre at Lilleshall, and excursions to major sporting events e.g. Wimbledon/Davis Cup Tennis/etc. In addition, pupils will be expected to take part in a nationally-recognised orienteering competition. Written Paper (40%) Pupils will be examined on many aspects of sport including : Factors affecting performance and participation Progression: GCSE qualification enables students to either progress directly to employment or proceed to further qualifications.
