2 : Word Balloon Styles

In the top panel, Jim has heard the radio announcement giving three minutes warning of a nuclear attack. Three distinct word balloon styles are being used - the radio announcement is in a jagged balloon, a common technique for showing words from a loudspeaker. As Jim's speech gets more urgent the letters and balloons get bigger. In the meantime Hilda hasn't quite worked out what's going on so is talking normally - the lettering and balloons remain small. Notice also how the characters overlap their panels in the bottom row, to give the impression of moving from their open room into the confined space of their shelter.

In the second panel (from the first Christian comic strip to be published) there is a hierarchy of word balloons - Jesus has his own distinct style of word balloon tinged with pink. God speaks in large letters as if from a cloud, and Satan speaks in nasty looking brown tinged balloons. Other characters have normal white word balloons.

In the third panel, Judge Death speaks in sinister dripping word balloons to add to his frightening appearance.
