1 : Standard Techniques

Source: 'The Wild Wonders' (Valiant) June 1968 --- Artist: Mike Western

These panels contain all the classic elements of a comic strip:

Word Balloons: To contain speech and show by whom it is said. Thought balloons can also be used - usually these are cloud-like, and link to the thinker with small bubbles.

Captions: Descriptive text at the frame top to move the action along.

Sound Effects: Text outside balloons to provide background sounds - notice how the size and style of the sound effects vary for emphasis.

Movement Lines: These emphasise speed and make the frame more dynamic, showing where movements originated from. Notice also the use of clouds, stars, and lines indicating actions and impacts.

Distinct Panels: Each scene is made to appear separate from the others, but this artist hasn't automatically framed each one inside a rectangle. For example, the top panel has only two side lines, and the second has none. Panels may alternate between framed and open, and frames may vary in shape.
